Omar J. Longoria's blog

Well, here's the link to my blog: tijdlozestijl.blogspot.com

(In case you're wondering, 'tijdloze stijl' means 'timeless style' in Dutch, which is a little something I came up with for a project for a graphic design class I was in last fall (J319 with Quarterman, which is now J303F or whatever))

- Omar J Longoria (ojl76)

P.s. The template I used was 'Picture Window,' starting from the one on the right, which already has certain elements like the use of transparent greys and such and I nice clean look that still allows for some excitement. I might change the background later or just make some nice high quality image, some simple pattern or something, later however.

P.p.s. Oops, I didn't see the part that mentioned only including the template name and such in a separate email but I already typed this up so, enjoy!

Female Oppression

What women experience is a world in which gallant princes charming commonly make a fuss about being helpful and providing small services when help and services are of little or no use, but in which there are rarely ingenious and adroit princes at hand when substantial assistance is really wanted either in mundane affairs or in situations of threat, assault or terror. There is no help with the (his) laundry; no help typing a report at 4:00 a.m.; no help in mediating disputes among relatives or children. There is nothing but advice that women should stay indoors after dark, be chaperoned by a man, or when it comes down to it, "lie back and enjoy it."
-Frye, Marilyn
“Oppression,” in The Politics of Reality (Freedom, CA: Crossing Press, 1983), pp. 1-16.

I enjoyed this article about the oppression of women, read more here...

My Preferred News Sources

Reddit.com - On August 29th, Obama broke Reddit by hosting an "Ask me Anything" session, where users could ask unfiltered questions to a live President for 30 minutes. I'm so happy his appearance has caused Reddit to increase in popularity, because it has so much too offer. You're bound to laugh when you're on it, with its overabundance of memes and other entertaining content. Most importantly, it is accurately called the "Front page of the Internet" because news always hits Reddit first; links to articles about current events are instantly uploaded from credible and unique sources.

This site has a lot of lingo to learn (up-votes, down-votes, subreddits, karma-whoring), but it is simple to learn and absolutely addictive.

I've enjoyed the New York Times op-ed page for a while now, my favorite reporter being Nicholas Kristof. There's not much to say here because nearly everyone is familiar with the newspaper, but I enjoy the columns they produce.

I started doing freelance work for NextGen nearly a year ago, and it is an amazing site for college students looking to hear the diverse viewpoints of young people across the nation from a variety of different universities. We're currently in the process of uniting with Facebook and The Washington Post in urging Obama and Romney to participate in an open forum, so the site has exciting prospects for the future.

I had an actual subscription to TIME Magazine for a couple of years and loved their page-length feature stories and analysis on the latest news (gun control, obesity, etc.) Their layout is especially enticing.

I'm also subscribed to all of these sites on Twitter.

For your laughter, a dancing (scratching?) panda!

Gilmore Girls

Though the series finale occurred a few years back, the fond memories I have of the show Gilmore Girls. Set in a small town up north, the tale of the unique friendship between a witty, fun-loving mother and her intelligent, simple daughter occupied a great deal of my free time as an adolescent. With bold and dramatic moments ranging from humor to anger to sadness to glee, this show always kept me on my toes in anticipation of a new season. The details of the set itself, combined with the  warmth and down-to-earth natures of the characters, always made me feel as if I was physically transported to little Stars Hollow during each episode.

The defining aspect of this show, setting it apart of others of its time, is the distinct relationship between the characters of Lorelai and Rory. Lorelai is the ambitious, fun-loving and dramatic mother. She is clever and funny, and her tongue drips with sarcasm. While much of her humor results from immaturity, the fact that she had Rory at sixteen and raised her as a single parent shows her maturity and ability to master the parenting role, as shown in certain scenes while disciplining Rory. This is often rare, for Rory is the perfect child. She is kind, intelligent and simple. She is never more happier than when she is reading a good book, and oftens calms down the wild and care-free nature of her mother.

Not Too Shabby

As an intern this summer, I had a lot of time on my hands to search the web for random things to entertain myself while I waited for the next batch of papers to scan.

Reddit is probably is best place for people that like cool random things. But if you are a cat hater or strong conservative, this is not the site for you. But if you love cats, technology, politics, or basically any random topic, there's a subreddit out there for you.

Buttermilk "plays" with her "friends" became one of my favorite videos this summer as well. Warning: do not watch during class, may cause loud obnoxious laughter.

Enjoy!

THE TOWN

My favorite movie is definitely The Town, directed by Ben Affleck.

Set in Charleston, Massachusetts, the "Bank Robbery Capital of America", a group of bank robbers get in too deep after finishing a job. One of their members becomes too close with a hostage they took and its only a matter of time before the whole things starts to crumble.

This is by far the best line in the movie.
